Custom Foot Orthotics

A foot orthotic is an arch support for your foot that is fitted into your shoe. They can be prescribed to help support pes planus (flat feet) or pes cavus (a high arched foot). They are also used to help reduce the pain you may experience in your feet from such conditions as plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, and arthritis.

Foot orthotics may also help reduce pain from other joints in the body such as the hip and knee. Sometimes a heel lift may be incorporated into a foot orthotic to address a leg length discrepancy.  Depending on your prescription and your  diagnosis, we can use a variety of materials to fabricate the foot orthotics to provide the comfort and support your feet need. Materials include carbon fibre, plastic, EVA, cork, or leather.

Supramalleolar Orthosis (SMO)

We assess, cast and fabricate custom SMO’s for our pediatric clients who require SMO’s to control and support their foot and ankle subtalar joint. SMO’s are used for pes planus (flat feet), over pronation, and hypotonia. SMO’s qualify for 75% funding through ADP.

Ankle Foot Orthosis

An Ankle Foot Orthosis (or AFO) is an orthotic brace typically made from plastic or may be custom designed to your footwear. They can  be solid (fixed) at the ankle joint or they can be more flexible and may even articulate with an ankle joint. An ankle foot orthosis is used to help maintain the ankle and foot in a neutral position to prevent loss of range of motion at the ankle joint.  An AFO can also assist a client with a drop foot in walking. Pathologies that can benefit from an AFO included; ALS, Cerebral palsy, Clubfoot, Down Syndrome, MS, Polio, Spina Bifida.

Knee Braces

We offer both custom made and off-the-shelf knee braces. These are often prescribed for medical conditions such as an ACL or PCL injury or osteo-arthritis.

Depending on your knee brace prescription, your consultation will involve a lower extremity assessment and measurements will be taken. If a custom knee brace is required a cast will be made and a fitting appointment will be given. If an off-the-shelf knee brace is prescribed, it may be fitted during your appointment.
